Fibre Internet Guide

The abbreviations in internet tariffs can be confusing. This guide explains the basic concepts so you can choose well.

Infrastructure types

  • FTTH (fibre to the home): fibre cable reaches your flat directly. It offers 1 Gbps and above, low latency and near-symmetric upload. It is the most future-proof technology.
  • FTTB (fibre to the building): fibre reaches the building entry point and copper or coaxial cable is used inside. In practice it gives 100-500 Mbps.
  • VDSL: 50-100 Mbps over a copper telephone line. Speed falls with distance from the exchange.

Speed and latency

Mbps (megabits per second) shows how fast data flows. Latency (ping) is the round-trip time of data; it matters for gaming and video calls. On fibre, ping is typically 3 to 10 ms.

Upload and download

Download matters for browsing and streaming. Upload is decisive for video conferencing, cloud backup and live streaming. On our fibre tariffs upload ranges from half of download speed up to equal to it.

Data caps and commitments

On unlimited tariffs speed does not drop after a certain amount of data. A commitment is a promise to remain a subscriber for a set period, in return for a discount or free installation.

How to choose the right tariff

Household size, the number of simultaneous devices and streams, and your work and gaming habits decide. The speed quiz on our site recommends the best speed in a few questions. After that, an infrastructure check shows which speed can be offered at your address.
